Production of synthetic fibres (E80)

Criteria question

Does the standard include specific criteria for different types of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres)?

Guidance

This criterion is relevant if the standard covers textiles containing more than 10% of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres). For other standards, the option "not relevant" has to be chosen. Specific criteria should be formulated at least either for the production of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres) or the sustainable sourcing of these fibres.

Regarding the production of synthetic fibres, criteria aiming at the reduction of environmental effects of their production should be formulated for at least the following synthetic fibres: man-made cellulose fibres (viscose, lyocell, modal), polyester fibres, polyacrylic fibres, elastane fibres and polypropylene fibres.

The sourcing of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres) can be addressed by formulating criteria on the use of either recycled fibres or fibres made of recycled pre- or post-consumer waste. The sourcing of man-made cellulose fibres can be addressed by demanding the use of cellulose sourced from wood that has been cultivated in accordance with the principles of sustainable forestry management as defined by the FAO.

To achieve compliance with DoI 1, the standard has to

  • Formulate specific criteria addressing the sustainable production of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres) for at least the following fibres: man-made cellulose fibres (viscose, lyocell, modal), polyester fibres, polyacrylic fibres, elastane fibres and polypropylene fibres;
  • OR Address the sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres (as described above).

To achieve compliance with DoI 2, the standard has to

  • Formulate specific criteria addressing the sustainable production of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres) for at least the following fibres: man-made cellulose fibres (viscose, lyocell, modal), polyester fibres, polyacrylic fibres, elastane fibres and polypropylene fibres;
  • Address the sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres (as described above).

To achieve compliance with DoI 3, the standard has to

  • Formulate specific criteria addressing the sustainable production of synthetic fibres (including man-made cellulose fibres) for at least the following fibres: man-made cellulose fibres (viscose, lyocell, modal), polyester fibres, polyacrylic fibres, elastane fibres and polypropylene fibres;
  • Address sustainable sourcing in a comprehensive manner, i.e. the standard favours the use of recycled fibres or fibres from recycled plastic waste.
  • Guarantee that man-made cellulose fibres are made to 100% of cellulose sourced from wood that has been cultivated in accordance with the principles of sustainable forestry management as defined by the FAO.

Degree of Intensity (DoI) [not existing]

  1. Not relevant.
  2. Standard formulates specific criteria for sustainable production of synthetic fibres OR addresses sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres.
  3. Standard formulates specific criteria for sustainable production of synthetic fibres AND addresses sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres.
  4. Standard formulates specific criteria for sustainable production of synthetic fibres AND addresses comprehensive sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres AND guarantees that man-made cellulose fibres have been cultivated sustainably.

In order to fulfil minimum criterion E80, the standard has to include an immediate obligatory requirement to formulate specific criteria for sustainable production of synthetic fibres OR address sustainable sourcing of synthetic fibres.
